To use this service you need to register with crawl-it. The "Registration" menu allows you to register by entering your URL and email ID. If you do not want to use the free service with advertising banners, then we need some additional information and a confirmation fax from you regarding your bank connection or credit card number. For your security we do not yet execute payments via the internet.

Once you have registered, your internet site is automatically searched (crawled) and an index is created in the crawl-it database. This is necessary in order to process search requests with optimal performance. Crawl-it searches all the HTML pages under the URL you have provided. Crawl-it does NOT index references to other internet sites, only those which are contained on your site. Crawl-it currently only indexes HTML pages. In future PDF and Word documents will also be indexed. However, crawl-it is already able to include java-based pages, as long as the URL's contained in JavaScript are fully available on the referenced pages. Crawl-it will not index pages which are created dynamically using JavaScript.


Once the indexing process is complete, you will receive a confirmation email from crawl-it and you can immediately begin using the service. In order for visitors to your web site to be able to use the search functionality, you need to add a search entry field to one or more of your web pages. The HTML code required is included in your confirmation email. Or you can copy the HTML text from the download section in your members' area. The HTML code can be included anywhere in your internet site. (For optimal user-friendly navigation, it is recommended to place the search entry field on your home or start page.)





Visitors to your web site can enter any keywords into the search entry field. By selecting the "GO" button the search process is started. The keywords are directed to the crawl-it server. The crawl-it software running on the crawl-it server returns a list of all pages in the stored index which match or contain the entered keywords, and display a list of all pages matching these keywords found on your website. Tthe list includes a short description of the content of each page. By selecting one of the links, the user can quickly navigate to the pages they are interested in. Keywords are not restricted to simple phrases, but can be connected, for example, using the symbols "+" for AND or "-" for NOT. Special language-specific characters such as German "umlauts" are also supported.




Registered crawl-it users can modify the layout of the hitlist returned by a search to suit their individual web site. You can either select from a number of predefined layouts or you can simply modify the individual design elements such as background color, link color, font, font size to meet your personal preferences. Experienced users can also select the Export Mode which allows independent modification of the hitlist to suit personal requirements, simply by providing the crawl-it server with the HTML code to be returned together with the hitlist to your web site. All these steps are easily managed within your personal members' area.

In addition to the design modification, crawl-it also offers a wide variety of statistical information for your analysis. Your password protected members' area contains a section with statistics on the search behaviour of visitors to your site. These are:
  1. The number of search requests per day or over a number of days.
  2. The most recently entered search keywords.
  3. The most frequently entered search keywords entered by your users over a particular period.
  4. Search keywords eneterd by your users which did not return any hits (pages).

By viewing the phrases your users are entering, you can easily modify your web site to provide the information your users are looking for.

The members' area allows you to view and modify your personal information, or to change to a different crawl-it tariff. You can also start a manual search for test purposes. A new index of your web site is created at regular, predefined intervals. In addition to these regular indexing intervals, you can manually index your web site via the members' area (for example, when the content of your website has changed). And you can view details on the last indexing process run against your site.
